  I have a few homes in Roanoke Rapids. About 6 years ago, I used Mark to grade my lawn and fill in a hole in the back of the yard as well as grind a stump on another property. I paid him well for the service, and when I started my renovation on another house in town, I decided I would use him to take care of a very big oak in the back yard. Since this was a total remodel, I needed some estimates on what the cost would be. He came out and gave me a quote for $600 to take the down the tree. I thanked him, and told him I would be in touch when I was ready to take it down. I also was getting 2 tandem loads of gravel for the driveway delivered. He quoted $200 to spread the gravel out. On the day he was supposed to come to the house to spread gravel, he did not show. I called him repeatedly, was never rude when leaving messages, but he never returned the calls. I decided, 2 months later, to go ahead and give him one more shot on the tree. There just aren't many tree people in Roanoke Rapids, and his prices were always fair. I actually got him to answer the phone when I called, didn't remind him that he didn't show for the gravel, and asked him to prune the back tree as opposed to cutting it down. The tree was the only large tree remaining, and it seemed a shame to cut it down completely. I just wanted the load lightened off the branches to mitigate storm risk to my property. He said he could give me an estimate, but I waived the estimate. I stated that as long as it wasn't over the quote he had given me to take down the tree, that he could come do the job, and I would pay him on Saturday or Sunday (when I was in town, because I live in Raleigh). He did not show up to do the work Wednesday through Friday, but I understood since the weather was rainy. He was supposed to show up on Saturday. I went to the bank to withdraw a good amount of money to pay him in cash (he always wants cash, and that will be one of the first things he will tell you). On Saturday, he did not show. He did not answer any of the phone calls I left him. And 2 days later, he hasn't bothered me to call.
  
  So, if you are desperate, and apparently you get lucky enough to find him needing money, you might get him to do a job for you. But at this point, I'd pull someone from a different town that has some professionalism and reliability then use this guy. I hate writing negative reviews, but feel as though I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and he didn't return the favor. Maybe I pissed him off at some point, and he just doesn't want to do any work for me, but since I've never been rude, never bickered about his pricing, and was intending to be a repeat customer, I'm not sure what I could have done.
